On the 11th of October 2016, the Leopoldina Academy Circle of Friends reg. ass. and the Centre for Science Studies of the Leopoldina invited its members and all other interested guests to participate in its annual event, which was set to take place in the reading room of the Leopoldina library.
Dr.-Ing. Horst Dietz, Chairperson of the Boards began the event by awarding Julia Carina Böttcher magistra artium, Munich/Regensburg the Johann-Lorenz-Bausch-scholarship.
Subsequently, PD Dr Arne Schirrmacher of the institute of history science, examined how academies and museums turned into institutions of political importance. These places are at times referred to as “political machines” (Tony Bennett). This was done by having a look at the examples of museums and exhibitions of science and the Science Center.
The presentation was followed by an excited discussion, moderated by Leopoldina member Prof. Dr Dieter Hoffmann, which further examined the matter and presented opportunities to ask questions and share personal experiences.
This successful and exciting event concluded with a closing reception with binding conversations.
